Dark Matter’s Empower now validates a borrower’s documents the moment they upload, checking each one against the loan condition it is meant to satisfy and returning a plain-language result. As Stephanie Durflinger puts it,
“When a borrower uploads a document, the review begins in that moment, and everyone on the loan gets an answer they can act on.”
Borrowers upload documents when it is convenient for them. Sometimes that is 9pm, sometimes it is 1am. Whether it is the right pay stub, whether it covers the right dates, whether it satisfies the condition it was requested for, none of that gets answered until someone in processing opens the file the next morning, or the day after. The document is in, but whether it worked stays unanswered until a person gets to it.
What does AI document validation at the point of sale actually do?
It reads a borrower’s document at upload, classifies it, and checks it against the specific loan condition it was requested to satisfy, then returns a clear result before the file ever reaches manual review. Inside the point-of-sale experience in Empower, this runs through our Document Validation Agent, a capability powered by Aiva, our intelligence layer. When a borrower uploads a pay stub for a condition asking for the last 30 days of income, the document is analyzed against that exact requirement and marked as meeting the criteria or not, with a summary of what was found.
The borrower sees the progression as it happens, from Uploading to Analyzing to Result, and then reads the outcome in plain language. A document that satisfies the condition can move forward on its own. A document that falls short comes back with a written explanation of why, so the borrower understands the gap instead of waiting to be told.
How does this change the borrower’s experience?
The feedback arrives in the moment, at the point where the borrower is already paying attention. Rather than uploading into silence, they learn immediately whether their document works, and if it does not, they can fix it on the spot. They can re-upload a corrected file and trigger a fresh check, or, when it makes sense, submit anyway and continue. The path forward stays in the borrower’s hands, and the loan keeps moving.
“We’re moving the intelligence to where the work begins. The borrower gets an answer, the loan officer gets the reasoning behind it, and the lender decides how much of that runs on its own.”

What does the loan officer see?
The same intelligence, with the reasoning attached. Every validated document carries a decision, a confidence indicator, and a written explanation of how it was evaluated, visible to the loan officer alongside the file. A new set of decision details sits inside the loan officer’s document view and tasks, so the officer can see at a glance which documents cleared on their own and which need a closer look. The work shifts from reading every page to reviewing the exceptions that need human judgment, with a full audit trail behind each outcome across initial uploads, re-uploads, and submit-anyway cases.
Does the lender stay in control of how it runs?
Yes, end to end. The workflow is configurable to the lender’s process and compliance posture. A lender can have documents that pass validation approved automatically, or route everything through loan officer review first, or turn the intelligence off entirely and keep the existing flow with no change. When a document meets its condition, the lender decides whether it advances on its own or waits for a person. That control is the point. The intelligence does the reading, and the lender sets the level of oversight.
This is how the point-of-sale experience in Empower is evolving. The document work starts where the borrower already is, the loan officer gets reasoning instead of raw files, and the lender holds the dial on how much runs automatically.
