Founded in 1908 to serve French-Canadian mill workers in Manchester, New Hampshire, St. Mary’s Bank didn’t just open its doors. It opened an entirely new chapter in U.S. financial history. Known then as La Caisse Populaire, Ste-Marie (“The People’s Bank”), it became the first credit union in the nation, built on a simple principle that still guides it today: help people save, borrow, and build better lives.
Change Is in Their DNA
More than 117 years later, St. Mary’s Bank remains member-owned and community-driven, but its mortgage operations look nothing like they did even a few years ago. What hasn’t changed is the mindset. The team sees technology as an extension of their mission to serve members efficiently, transparently, and on their own terms.
When the pandemic pushed lending teams remote, Jessica Cutone, Mortgage Operations Manager, led a transformation that replaced paper files with fully digital workflows. The key wasn’t chasing new tools. It was building a repeatable, people-first approach to change. St. Mary’s Bank has made the change management as important as the change itself.
A Practical Playbook for Change
- Engage leadership early. Managers are involved in every major decision, shaping priorities and helping their teams understand the “why” behind each rollout.
- Equip the front line. Checklists, scripts, and real-time support keep loan officers confident through new processes.
- Communicate proactively. Automated notifications now update borrowers and Realtor partners so loan officers can focus on relationships instead of status calls.
- Learn and iterate. Every release is followed by a quick debrief on what worked, what didn’t, and what to improve next.
“It’s easier for everyone to embrace change when they see the full picture and have the tools to make it work,” Hodgson says.
Empower and the Art of Streamlined Lending
As part of its modernization, St. Mary’s adopted Dark Matter Technologies’ Empower loan origination system to consolidate manual steps into a single, orchestrated process. With simplified quarterly releases, their administrator can test and deploy faster without losing weekends to regression cycles.
Features like Day 1 Certainty integrations, soft credit pulls, and document-tracking automation have reduced PDF overload and improved pre-approval times. The orchestration and notification capabilities within Empower also keep everyone in sync, from borrower to Realtor to underwriter.
“Empower’s release cadence and communication tools give our team confidence,” Cutone explains. “We spend less time troubleshooting and more time serving members.”
Meeting Members Where They Are
Even as e-close and data-driven verifications roll out, St. Mary’s continues to honor member choice. Some still prefer to sign documents in person. Others want to complete everything online. The team’s flexible approach meets borrowers in their comfort zone.
Upcoming initiatives include a rapid-loan program and a redesigned construction-to-perm workflow that will automate more manual steps and improve both speed and accuracy.
117 Years In, Still Member-Owned
From a borrowed metal safe in 1908 to a modern headquarters on McGregor Street today, St. Mary’s Bank has evolved continuously while staying true to its purpose. Every improvement, whether moving to online banking decades ago or adopting Empower today, has been about creating value for members.
At Dark Matter Technologies, we’re proud that Empower helps St Mary’s Bank deliver on that mission. But the real story belongs to St. Mary’s Bank, a 117-year example of how lasting innovation happens when people and technology move forward together.
