My Vision as Dark Matter’s New CTO

My appointment as Chief Technology Officer marks an exciting new chapter for Dark Matter Technologies. Thanks to the strong foundation built during our separation from ICE Mortgage Technology, we can now shift our focus from simply maintaining systems to driving innovation.

As CTO, my mission is to lead our technology journey forward, not just within our company but alongside our clients. Together, we’ll explore new possibilities, embrace platform transformations and create solutions that move the entire industry forward.

Bridging Technology and Business

Having spent the last decade in financial technology and mortgage fintech, I have unique insight into both the technical architecture powering our platforms and the business realities our clients navigate.

My approach combines technological expertise with a product mindset. I don’t view technology and product development as separate disciplines but as integrated forces working harmoniously to deliver exceptional customer value.

Building a Culture of Excellence

Cross-department collaboration is essential for delivering cohesive customer experiences. I am working closely with our sales, account management and professional services teams because when we break down internal barriers, we create seamless experiences that clients notice and appreciate.

Our core platforms, including the Empower® LOS, the AIVA® AI assistants, the Elevate Loan Servicing System and the Exchange℠ platform, have served clients well, and they require continuous modernization to meet tomorrow’s demands. The servicing platform represents a perfect example of this forward-thinking approach. By investing in its architecture and adding new tools and integrations, we’re making our products more relevant for years and creating cost efficiencies for our clients.

This philosophy guides our decisions on enhancements: Each must deliver measurable value to the lenders who depend on our technology.

Empowering Customer Innovation Through Open APIs

We released the Developer Platform in April, exposing APIs from the Empower LOS and other products to clients and partners. This represents the beginning of our innovation enablement strategy: We’re creating an ecosystem where clients can build upon our foundation, extending functionality to meet their specific needs while maintaining the security and reliability they expect from Dark Matter.

The artificial intelligence (AI) revolution presents both opportunity and uncertainty for our clients. Every lender is grappling with AI’s potential impact on operations, wondering how to harness these powerful tools effectively.

Rather than leaving clients to navigate this complexity alone, we’re positioning Dark Matter as their trusted guide by implementing the Model Context Protocol. This will enable clients to use AI agents that connect seamlessly with the Dark Matter Developer Platform so lenders can deploy intelligent automation that integrates directly with our systems, streamlining workflows and enhancing decision-making capabilities.

The response from clients previewing the concept has been overwhelmingly positive. We’re providing clear direction in an area where many feel uncertain.

Delivering Proven AI Benefits to Clients

Internally, we’re already seeing the productivity benefits of AI tools. We use Microsoft Copilot to integrate SharePoint, Outlook and Microsoft Teams, demonstrating how AI can make teams more effective. We’re rolling out GitHub Copilot to all our developers, providing them with AI-powered code generation capabilities that significantly enhance productivity. But we’re not keeping these benefits to ourselves. We’re helping clients implement GitHub Copilot with our Developer Portal, giving them the same productivity advantages we enjoy.

These AI integrations represent a transformational approach to mortgage lending technology that our competitors have yet to embrace. By leading this charge, we’re establishing Dark Matter as the innovation leader in our industry while providing clients with competitive advantages they can’t find elsewhere.

Leading Industry Transformation

Looking ahead, I want our technology group to become the partner clients turn to for guidance on their innovation journeys. As they adopt AI, APIs and other emerging technologies, they should see Dark Matter as their trusted advisor and implementation partner. This positioning benefits everyone: clients get expert guidance, and we maintain our role as an essential component of their technology stack.

By combining platform modernization with AI integration and maintaining our customer-first focus, we’re creating the foundation for sustained success in an increasingly competitive market. That’s the standard I’m committed to delivering as Dark Matter’s CTO.

Vikas Rao joined Dark Matter in April 2024 as Deputy Chief Product Officer, following five years at Ellie Mae, where he led product strategy for the Encompass loan origination platform and the Developer Connect API suite. As Dark Matter’s CTO, he has redefined the company’s product vision, culminating in the launch of the Dark Matter Developer Portal. He was recently named a 2025 HousingWire Insider.
